Brian Ravnholt Jepsen – “MORBID ANGEL”

June 4 – July 4 2010

WAS – Wonderland Art Space proudly presents ’Morbid Angel’ – WAS’ first solo-exhibition with the young and progressive artist Brian Ravnholt Jepsen. ‘Morbid Angel’ is an anthropological study of man’s curiosity, fascination and morbid mind. It revolves around themes such as flight crashes, peripheral religious associations, fragility, life, death, humour, subtlety, and a universal, sombre transitoriness.

With simple, distinctive artistic effects, the exhibition is physically importunate and leaves traces from our common vulnerability. It conveys morbid testimonies on situations, which we all know, yet preferably don’t want to acknowledge; on our inherent, unavoidable and almost sinister attraction to further explore the nature of catastrophe; our fascination of the grotesque and macabre. The curiosity, the yearn and urge of being stimulated by the encounter with the unknown, which will either cause shock, disgust, horror, and contempt, or maybe even thrill and enthusiasm!

The exhibition presents works created of fluorescent lights including the audience in the inevitable symbolic and religious nature of the light; enlarged Polaroid photos immersed in oil in tightly closed showcases made of glass and attached with fluorescent lights; and 24 text-based works burned on wood and printed on towels, and consisting of the last dialogues between pilots in the airplane cockpits before tragic and brutal crashes.
Brian Ravnholt Jepsen (f. 1977) is educated from the Funen Art Academy, Denmark, in 2009, and has already showcased in New York, Berlin, Brussels, Oslo, and Copenhagen. With his cunning, humoristic, absurd, and playful work, his artistic project can be describes as a form of ”slacker art”; an art form, which has a deliberate homemade quality to it, constructed of undistinguished and scavenged everyday-materials such as cardboard, polystyrene, toilet paper, and junk wood in accordance with the low-tech DIY aesthetics.

With his idea-based approach, Brian Ravnholt Jepsen works with numerous artistic expressions and medias – from Polaroid photo series, homemade instruments and inventions, to works based on sound and neon light, body casts, and a documentary of an ostrich wearing tennis socks. Drawing his inspiration from music, science fiction and spacecraft films, the result is a subtle object-art, which allegedly appears low-tech, but simultaneously contains an enormous amount of energy, ingenuity, and complication. Thus, an expressiveness is inherent in his art, which, as process-oriented experiments, include audience-based experiences and concurrently are easily decipherable and publicly accessible as well as characterized by an uncompromising originality and complexity.
